By Ryan Schnurr. The Maumee River Basin is the largest watershed in the Great Lakes region, collecting runoff from more than 6, square miles in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan and depositing it in Lake Erie—though as the lake’s largest tributary the river’s influence is not entirely : ISBN The Maumee River watershed was once part of the Great Black Swamp, a remnant of Glacial Lake Maumee, the proglacial ancestor of Lake Erie. The 1,square-mile (3, km 2) swamp was a vast network of forests, wetlands, and grasslands, a rich habitat for numerous species of birds, animals, fish and the 19th century, European-American settlers struggled to drain the swamp and to Country: United States.

The river was named by French traders however, but for another reason. According to Dr. Charles Slocum in his book, History of the Maumee River Basin, published in , the French traders did encounter Indians along the river. The French traders understood that the name of the tribe of Indians was Me-ah-me, and referred to the river as Riviere. Ohio EPA has chosen the adjacent Portage River basin for a pilot.

Summary: The decay of Lake Erie’s environmental health and its impacts on local communities, including public health and the environment, was one of the focal events motivating the passage of the Clean Water Act in Maumee River Watershed.

The Maumee River watershed is located in northwestern Ohio. It drains a total of 5, square miles in Ohio and flows through all or part of 18 counties.

Major municipalities partially or fully in the watershed include Toledo, Defiance, Findlay, Lima. A small sheltered basin at the station has depths of 8 feet decreasing to 6 feet at the edges.

Between Catawba Island and Locust Point (41°'N., 83°'W.), a rounding projection 12 miles W, a broad open bight has depths less than 24 feet.

The Portage River empties into the S side of the bight. A large. EPA/A GLA THE MAUMEE RIVER BASIN PILOT WATERSHED STUDY Continued Watershed Monitoring () and Rainulator Study Volume IV by TERRY J.

The Maumee River, the most prominent watershed in the basin, begins in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and extends more than miles to Lake Erie, miles of which are located in Ohio (Fig.

The Maumee River has the largest drainage. Pilot watershed studies were undertaken in six major drainage basins in the Great Lakes basin, in eleven smaller agricultural watersheds in southern Ontario, in one forested watershed area in northern Ontario, west of the Lake Superior basin, and at a few other locations where specific sources of contaminants were evaluated.

Institutional Readiness for Integrated Watershed Management One of the main goals of the RAP's Urban Runoff Action Group is to develop a watershed-based storm water management program.

The group has received a grant from the Lake Erie Protection Fund to conduct a feasibility study for creating a watershed-wide utility to control urban by: USGS National Water Census Water Budget Data Resources for the Lower Maumee - HUC (Turn off compatibility view settings in IE if having problems viewing this site) EPA - Watershed Assessment, Tracking and Environmental Results (WATERS) for the Lower Maumee - HUC The Port of Toledo and the Maumee River Basin Introduction.

If you were flying over Toledo in the summer, you would observe a city with a huge expanse of water on its doorstep and a plume of sediment flowing out into Lake Erie.

As is the case with many other deep-draft ports, a river also runs through it. MAUMEE WATERSHED The Western Lake Erie Basin covers over million acres across Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
